Trip Tips, Cost and Weather

This trip was with Arizona River Rafters (ARR) https://www.raftarizona.com/

Some tips for the trip:

Like I could give anyone tips for this trip.... I was the least experienced person on the trip!

Put everything in your duffle into zip lock bags and plastic bags because the dry bags may leak! Water seeps thru holes in older dry bags, or a bag that isn't rolled and sealed well.  The first couple days my duffel, sleep bag and sheet was wet wet wet. But thankfully dried by the time i was ready to go to bed.

Some people brought an extra mattress layer to put on the cot.  The cots droop a bit, so not too comfortable for a good sleep,

Packing

ARR's list

https://www.raftarizona.com/trip-info-full-canyon-to-diamond-creek-itinerary/?show=packinglist

REQUIRED:

Rain Jacket and Rain Pants

Required.

Hat

A hat is required. Bring one with a big stiff brim to shade eyes and ears.

I pinned a butterfly to the top of my hat, but my hat did not have a wide enough brim and it was floppy. So Damona graciously let me use her hat after she left on Day 4. Thank you Damona! I loved the hat.  Several other people also had this hat. You can find it on Amazon: Sunday Afternoons Adventure Hat UPF 50+ Outdoor Sun Hat.

Shirt

Make sure it has a hood and long sleeves for sun protection!

I had two shirts, but I only only wore one shirt for all 13 days. I did not want to stain (ruin) the other shirt so I never wore it on the river.

Don't pack loud colors

Socks

I had 1 pair of socks to wear with my sandals when I wasn't on the river.

On the river, I wore dad's 70-year old 100% wool socks that he wore in the army in 1956. They

Shoes

Astral water shoes - several people had these. I think I remember a man

Astral Men's and Womens Loyak shoes or Astal Brewer (low-cut) - Several people had these. I remember one man saying they didn't provide enough support to feel confident on the hike.

Astral Webber sandals - I brought these to wear when I was not on the river. I do not recommend them for on the river and hiking.

I had Ryka water shoes https://www.ryka.com/ which provided good support. But they collected alot of sand so I had to rinse them off each night, then they were dry in the morning.

Gloves

I was so glad I had my rubber palm garden gloves that covered my fingers. Made it easier to keep a strong hold on the straps thru rapids and it kept the sun off the back of my hands.

Also good to bring gloves if your rower allows you to attempt rowing on a calm part of the river.

Kenyon told a funny story about buying winter gloves because he saw that on the list. He did not need winter gloves on this trip!

Sarong

Should be required on this trip. Always have your sarong in your day bag. When the round orb of death (sun) is beating you down and it's a quiet part of the river (there are a several calm moments) dip the sarong in the river and lay it over your legs for temporary relief. It dries quickly.

I also had a neck gaiter ("The Buff"). Easy to dip in the water and put on legs, and I wore it around my wrist to keep the sun off the back of my hand.
